Francophone African literature promoted by female writers is principally concerned with the condition of the African woman within the patriarchal structures of the African society. In conformity with the objective of the engagement of feminists writers, Calixthe Beyala is concerned with the issue of identity crisis of the african woman, her sexuality, her femininity, and the oppressive social and cultural norms to which she is subjected. In this study, we demonstrate how Beyala uses literature as a powerful tool to explore and to get people to understand the experiences of African women and as well as claim their rights and gender equality. Through the interpretation of the condition of Tanga, the main character, in Tu t'appeleras Tanga, our analysis depicts the challenges confronting African women in their quest for emancipation and corporal freedom and also the psychological torture that ensues. Keywords: Struggle, emancipation, African woman, feminism, psychoanalysis.
